Conjunctivul și condiționalul (B2)

Advanced Romanian relies heavily on the subjunctive (conjunctiv) — much more than English does. Combined with the conditional, it lets you express wishes, hypotheses, polite requests and counterfactuals naturally.

Grammar

Conditional present and past

Present: aș/ai/ar/am/ați/ar + infinitive without „a”. Past: aș + fi + past participle.

  • Aș merge cu tine. — I would go with you.
  • Am fi venit, dar a plouat. — We would have come, but it rained.
  • Ar fi trebuit să-mi spui. — You should have told me.

Conditional sentences (type 2 and 3)

Type 2 (unreal present): dacă + imperfect, then present conditional. Type 3 (unreal past): dacă + mai-mult-ca-perfect, then past conditional.

  • Dacă aveam timp, veneam. — If I had time, I would come.
  • Dacă aș avea bani, aș călători. — If I had money, I would travel.
  • Dacă aș fi știut, aș fi rămas. — If I had known, I would have stayed.
